Wednesday Evening

Mobile Workshops: Once again we’ll be offering mobile workshops this year to give folks a chance to take a closer look at some of the good things happening in local communities. The following mobile workshops will be offered Wednesday morning, September 9th.  Each begins at 9:00 a.m. and will conclude no later than 11:30 a.m. Space limitations are noted for each. Preregistration is encouraged.  Same day registration will only be permitted if space is available.  Our thanks to UTA for once again providing transportation for these mobile events.

  • Building Bicycle and Pedestrian Friendly Communities Communities throughout the state are striving to become more bicycle and pedestrian friendly to improve quality of life, safety, and to give their citizens more transportation options. This mobile workshop will begin in the classroom where design, construction, and maintenance of streets and trails from a bicyclist and pedestrian perspective will be discussed.  And then the fun begins. The remainder of the session you’ll be on a bicycle seeing first hand the issues discussed in the classroom.  The registration fee for this tour is $20, which includes a bike and helmet. Space is limited to 20 participants.
  • Downtown Salt Lake City Walking Tour While the scale of downtown Salt Lake City is clearly unique in Utah, you’d be surprised how many planning and design concepts found there are applicable to downtowns all over the state. On this walking tour you’ll have a chance to learn more about the ordinances, and planning and design tools that are the foundation of what you see on the ground and in the sky in downtown Salt Lake City.  The registration fee for this tour is $10 and space is limited to 30 participants.
  • Mixed Use Developments   In the last decade the thinking on mixed used developments has gone from “that crazy idea will never work” to “thank you, will you develop another one?”  But like all developments, some of them work, and some of them don’t. Whether a project is successful or not depends on many factors and this tour will visit a few mixed use projects in the Salt Lake Valley that reflect varying degrees of success.  The registration fee for this tour is $10 and space is limited to 45 participants.
